Home is where the heart is, but for some 10 million people it's also where the job is. The steady rise in home-based businesses is due not only to corporate layoffs but also to Americans wanting more flexibility and time for the kids. If you're thinking of taking the leap, here are some questions you'll need to consider:

Why do you want to start a home business? Is it to do something you love -- or to get away from a job you hate? "The clearer your focus, the more successful you'll be," says Paul Edwards, Pine Mountain Club, CA-based coauthor of The Entrepreneurial Parent.

Do you have the right personality? Will you miss the social life that an office provides? A self-assessment will help you decide whether you're suited for entrepreneurial life.

Will you have competition? Consider what makes your product different. On the other hand, no matter how good your idea is, your business will fade fast if there's little demand.

How will you handle childcare? Whether you'll work part-time or full-time, you'll need some kind of supplemental childcare if you have young kids.

Can you legally operate a business in your home? Check local zoning ordinances. If your homeowners' insurance doesn't cover damages to your home office, you'll need additional coverage.

5 Ways to Get Your Business off the Ground


1. Do your homework. Ask potential clients and customers what they need from a business like yours, and how much they're willing to pay for it. Research the competition in your area, and figure out a way to set yourself apart.

2. Check legalities. Call your state, city, or town government to see whether you need licenses or permits to operate.

If you are a blogger and you want to be successful, writing great material, unfortunately, will not get you to your goal.  You need traffic to your site.  Without traffic, no one will read what you write and this is a challenge to many bloggers out there.  How does one generate traffic for his or her site? 

There are various online services and sources you can use as well as tips to generate the traffic you need to get recognized. 

 

The services and sources that you can use are on the websites Digg and Stumbleupon.  Digg.  They allow you to get your material on the web and generate popularity that way and then you can bring fellow bloggers over to your own site.  Digg works in the following manner:  First you upload an article, a story, a commentary, whatever you like.  Digg will put your entry onto its upcoming stories page where fellow visitors will check out your upload. 

If visitors like your submission then they can Digg it.  By doing this, you will gain popularity.  If you reach the number of popularity hits then Digg will put your submission on its respective homepage and if it continues to be successful there it will further be placed on the top ten list.  Digg also has a forum for you to add and meet friends who are interested in the same topics and you can discuss what Digg items you find.  This way you will build a network that you can direct to your own site.  You can also advertise your site on Digg. 

 

The other service is Stumbleupon.  Stumbleupon helps bloggers in the same way as Digg.  Based upon good and bad commentaries, while you are trying to stumble upon a website, the stumble search that comes up is generated from stumble friends and other members who have the same preferences and tastes as you do.  Therefore, if Stumbleupon members enjoy your website that you submitted onto the site, you will have good ratings.  The more ratings you have, the higher up on the Stumbleupon search engine you will be on.  Between Digg and Stumbleupon, these are the two top ranked services that will help you launch your website.    

 

However, even though you use services sometimes they are not enough.  It is one thing to have people to come to your web site, but it is another thing to keep them coming.  You want to generate buzz about your website so you are going to have to make your blogging skills top notch.  The following are a list of blogging tips to generate traffic to your site.

 

The first piece of advice is to follow your blog and the commentaries that are left.  If people are responding to your website, to your pictures, to your opinions, etc. you need to respond back. With these responses you will create more buzz plus you will be telling your readers that you care what they think.  It also creates a conversation flow. If you start to run out of ideas, hop onto your respondents websites and regenerate conversation on your blog.

 

Then you can research other blog websites that are similar to yours.  Start conversations on other websites with a similar premise and leave a link to your website.  You know that the people leaving commentaries there are interested in the same subject as you, so it should not be hard to win them over.  Once again you will have to write something catchy on someone else's blog to make others want to follow your link.

 

Try to offer something that visitors need.  If you have quality writing you will keep your readers engaged.  If your blog is pure opinions regarding nothing, there is not much there to keep the attention of your readers.  If you write how to articles, news articles, movie reviews anything that is new and fresh that offers your reader more than you not liking a celebrity because of how that celebrity acts.  You have to have substance or else your blog will not survive.

 

If you are fascinated by rocket science, physics even mechanics, the general population does not understand that language per se.  It does not mean that your potential audience is unintelligent, it just means that they are not adept to it because what is the point of reading something that one does not understand.  Therefore, make your passion readable to all viewers.  Use ordinary terminology to explain complex ideas or issues.  Write directions, a bibliography or have a special vocabulary section to help your readers.

 

While writing make your blog special.  If you right plain, in between material that does not make a statement no one wants to read it.  Think of it this way.  When you read a headline that makes you sick because of the content it is suggesting such as racism, doesn't it make you want to read it that much more?  It is not because you are in favor of the article, it is because you cannot believe that someone would say something so horrible.  It is provocative.  If you do not make a statement, if you are not provocative, you will not generate traffic. 

 

Jazz up your website.  By revamping your website you will please the senses of your regular readers as well as possibly attracting new ones.  You can submit your newly designed website to a CSS gallery which will have a back link to your website.  This will create more traffic to your site.  You can also add a translator to your page.  By adding this feature, you can attract non native English speakers.  The translation may not be professional, especially if it is a free translator, but it will at least get your message across and generate traffic from abroad.

10 Things You Must Do For 2009

With all the scare-mongering that is going on in the media at the moment surrounding the downturn, recession, depression or basically badly blown out economy (or at least as they would have you believe), you could be forgiven for pulling down your blinds and hanging up the 'out of business' sign in your shop front. That is if you've even managed to hang on to your premises for this long or even have a physical store front since the advent of the internet. But just like when I am running a business or marketing consult session with a client, I tend to encourage people to stop focusing on the negative or problems at hand and start coming up with possible solutions....

With all the scare-mongering that is going on in the media at the moment surrounding the downturn, recession, depression or basically badly blown out economy (or at least as they would have you believe), you could be forgiven for pulling down your blinds and hanging up the ‘out of business’ sign in your shop front. That is if you’ve even managed to hang on to your premises for this long or even have a physical store front since the advent of the internet.

But just like when I am running a business or marketing consult session with a client, I tend to encourage people to stop focusing on the negative or problems at hand and start coming up with possible solutions. A simple brain storm BEFORE the pressure really hits or even in the midst of a crisis is a good way to remain optimistic about the year ahead (and to bring out my inner hippie, a little positive energy all around never hurt anyone).

By focusing on some specific tasks that will put you in a better position, or give you a position in the first place if you are a new businesss on the block, you should begin to see real results.

 

My first posting this year is therefore 10 possible ‘solutions’ or suggested marketing activities/strategies that will suit most businesses that I encourage you to consider implementing in the interest of battening down the hatches.

And whilst it is certainly better to do something rather than nothing, I would strongly encourage you to employ multiple strategies so that if you find one doesn’t work, you can put more into the strategies that you are finding ARE working for you. Like everything in marketing, to some degree it’s a little bit of test, measure, refine then repeat.

So without further adieu, here’s what I recommend you get busy with in 2009:

1. Have a website that has been created post 2005, which you can quickly and easily updates yourself and that is search engine friendly. If your site is all of these things but has not yet been search engine optimized, get this into play pronto too.

2. Have a blog that syndicates content in multiple locations every time you make a new posting be it audio, video or word content. There are whispers that audio and video will increase in their level of importance when it comes to performance online in 2009.

3. Have a company Facebook page and depending on what you do, be exploring the capability of running demographically targeted ad campaigns through Facebook.

4. Get key company documents i.e. templates, forms, contacts, procedures and policies ONLINE utilizing technology such as wikis, Google Docs or otherwise where you can share and collaborate online and mobilize your business. If things are quieter than usual, there is no better time to get this key documentation for your business in place.

5.Explore other social media realms and possibilities i.e. digg, LinkedIn, twitter, You Tube etc

6. Make sure that in all your marketing material it is explicitly clear what you offer and what action you want them to take. If it’s not, change your marketing to something that is powerful and effective.

7. Know down to the lead and the last dollar what marketing activities out there are generating you in terms of inquiries and sales and stop or decrease all marketing activities that are not providing you with a good return on your investment.

8. Have a bullet proof data capture system for all incoming inquiries be they walk ins, fax, phone, email or otherwise whereby you ask for their name, contact number, email and how they heard about you. Ensure you have a system in place that you follow them up systematically until they convert into a paying customer.

9. Revive your de-activated clients – that is people who have not spent money with you in some time. Most businesses are sitting on a gold mine of information and ‘warm’ leads from people who have done business with them in the past, but who they have never since contacted to see if they can get an upsell or cross-sell from a re-contact or even a referral.

10. Set up a Google Alert so you are the first to know when mentions of your company, product or service are made online, be it good or bad coverage. You may also like to careful eye on your competitors through Google Alerts and other tools online to see how they are weathering the potentially rocky economic storm.
